Lovely December 2026: A DMC Guide to Tana Toraja
December 17, 2025

Lovely December is the season of festivals, Christmas homecomings and ceremonies in Tana Toraja, in the highlands of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Local governments run a programme of events through the month, while families who have moved away come home for Christmas and for traditional ceremonies. This guide is for travel agents, tour operators and group organisers planning Toraja in December 2026.
Lovely December 2026: dates
The 2026 programme is to be confirmed. Lovely December runs through the month of December, but as of 15 October 2026 the regencies of Tana Toraja and North Toraja had not published their 2026 event schedule. We will confirm event dates as soon as they are announced.
Note that the Toraja Highland Festival, sometimes grouped with Lovely December, is usually held in October, not December. Its 2025 edition ran from 23 to 25 October 2025 in North Toraja ([Indonesia Ministry of Tourism listing](https://www.indonesia.travel/gb/en/events/event-detail/toraja-highland-festival)).
What is Lovely December?
Lovely December began as a regional tourism initiative to bring the highlands' year-end celebrations together under one name, and it has been promoted in Indonesia's national tourism event calendar. Past programmes have included a buffalo carnival, a coffee festival, culinary and music events, Christmas choir festivals, fireworks and a closing procession after Christmas. Bamboo cannons have also been a highlight in recent years.
Each year's programme differs, so treat these as examples of what to expect, not as the 2026 schedule.
Toraja culture in brief
The Toraja live in the mountains of South Sulawesi, around the towns of Makale and Rantepao. Their villages are known for the tongkonan, ancestral houses with sweeping boat-shaped roofs, often facing rice barns of the same shape. Most Toraja today are Christian, which is why Christmas is a major homecoming, while many customs of the traditional belief system, Aluk To Dolo, live on in family ceremonies.
Toraja ceremonies fall into two broad groups: Rambu Tuka, the ceremonies of joy and thanksgiving, such as the blessing of a new tongkonan, and Rambu Solo, the ceremonies of death. Both can take place in December.
Rambu Solo: Toraja funeral ceremonies
Toraja is known for Rambu Solo, the funeral ceremonies that accompany the dead to the afterlife, Puya. Ceremonies can last several days and include processions, the ma'badong chant and dance, the hosting of large numbers of guests, and the sacrifice of buffalo and pigs, whose meat is shared with the community.
December is a common time for ceremonies because families return home for the holidays, but every ceremony is a private family event with its own date. No one can promise a specific ceremony months in advance. Guides usually learn of ceremonies through the community, often only weeks or days before, so build flexibility into the programme and set this expectation with clients.
Etiquette for visitors
- Dress: dark, modest clothing, and no shorts.
- Gifts: visitors traditionally bring a small gift for the host family, such as sugar or cigarettes. The guide will advise and present it with the group.
- Behaviour: follow the guide, sit where the family directs, and ask before photographing people or the sacrifice.
- Preparation: the sacrifice is graphic. Brief clients in advance and offer an alternative activity to anyone who prefers not to attend.
Sights to include in December
- Ke'te Kesu: a village of traditional tongkonan houses with ancient graves, near Rantepao.
- Londa and Lemo: cliff and cave burial sites with tau-tau effigies.
- Batutumonga and Lolai: highland viewpoints; Lolai is known for sunrise above the clouds.
- Buntu Burake: the large statue of Jesus above Makale, a focus for visitors at Christmas.
- Toraja coffee: visits to coffee farms and cafés in the highlands.
Planning a group for Lovely December 2026
Lead times
- Rooms: Toraja has a limited number of hotels suitable for groups, and December is when many families come home. Hold rooms in Rantepao or Makale now, and confirm as the 2026 programme is published.
- Getting there: most groups fly to Makassar and continue by road, a long transfer that takes most of a day. Toraja Airport near Makale has had limited scheduled flights, so check current schedules before relying on them.
- Guides: the right local guide matters more here than almost anywhere, because access to ceremonies depends on community relationships. Book guides together with the rooms.
Logistics
- Vehicles: highland roads are narrow and winding, so smaller coaches or minibuses are more practical than full-size coaches.
- Traffic: the main road between Makale and Rantepao can slow down during parades and events. Schedule transfers for early morning or late evening.
- Weather: December is in the wet season. Plan flexible days so outdoor visits can be swapped when it rains, and advise clients to pack rain gear and good shoes.
- Time: allow at least three nights in Toraja, so the group can attend a ceremony if one takes place and still see the main sights if it does not.
A sample four-day programme
- Day 1: Makassar to Toraja by road, with stops along the way; evening arrival in Rantepao.
- Day 2: Ke'te Kesu, Londa and Lemo, with an introduction to Toraja beliefs and burial customs.
- Day 3: a ceremony if one is taking place and the family welcomes visitors; if not, Batutumonga, the highland villages and the market in Rantepao.
- Day 4: sunrise at Lolai if the weather allows, Buntu Burake, then the return to Makassar.
Fitness and accessibility
Many Toraja sites involve steps, slopes and uneven paths, and ceremony grounds and village paths turn muddy after rain. Tell us about guests with limited mobility when you brief us, so the programme can favour sites with easier access and keep vehicles close.
Other times to visit Toraja
December is not the only season. Ma'nene, the ritual in which some families clean and re-dress the remains of their ancestors, is usually held after the harvest, around August, in parts of North Toraja, and the Toraja Highland Festival takes place in October. Both can anchor a programme outside the December peak.
Combining Toraja with a wider programme
Toraja pairs well with Makassar, or with Bali or Java for clients on a longer Indonesia journey. See our Indonesia destination guide, and the Southeast Asia festival calendar 2027 for next year's events.
