Best Time to Visit Southeast Asia for Groups: A Country-by-Country Seasonality Guide
October 14, 2026

"When is the best time?" has a different answer in every country of Southeast Asia, and often in different parts of the same country. For a tour operator planning a series or a brochure season, the useful question is narrower: when is each destination dry, when is it crowded, and where does the green season give good value? This guide gives the general pattern by country. Weather varies from year to year, so check the national meteorological services before fixing dates.
The pattern at a glance
- Thailand (Bangkok, north, Andaman coast): generally drier Nov–Apr, generally wetter Jun–Oct. Mar–May is the hottest period.
- Thailand (Koh Samui, Gulf coast): generally drier Jan–Aug, generally wetter Oct–Dec. Opposite to the Andaman coast.
- Vietnam (north: Hanoi, Ha Long): generally drier Oct–Apr, generally wetter May–Sep. Cool to cold in Dec–Feb.
- Vietnam (centre: Hoi An, Da Nang): generally drier Feb–Aug, generally wetter Sep–Dec. Heaviest rain in autumn.
- Vietnam (south: Ho Chi Minh City): generally drier Dec–Apr, generally wetter May–Nov. Warm all year.
- Cambodia: generally drier Nov–Apr, generally wetter May–Oct. Mar–May is very hot.
- Laos: generally drier Nov–Apr, generally wetter May–Oct. Cooler mornings in Dec–Jan in the north.
- Indonesia (Bali, Java): generally drier Apr–Oct, generally wetter Nov–Mar. Nyepi closes Bali for one day in Mar/Apr.
- Malaysia (west coast, Langkawi): generally drier Dec–Mar, generally wetter Apr–May, Oct–Nov. Warm all year.
- Malaysia (east coast): generally drier Apr–Sep, generally wetter Nov–Mar. Monsoon on the east coast.
- Singapore: generally drier Feb–Apr, generally wetter Nov–Jan. Showers possible all year.
Planning around peak periods
- European winter (November to March) is the classic season for mainland Southeast Asia, and the busiest. Hotels in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Siem Reap and Luang Prabang fill early around Christmas and New Year.
- Lunar New Year (Tết in Vietnam, Chinese New Year in Singapore and Malaysia) in January or February affects prices and opening hours.
- Mid-April water festivals (Songkran, Pi Mai, Khmer New Year) are a highlight but sell out; see our 2027 festival calendar.
- European summer (July and August) suits Bali, Java and Malaysia's east coast, which are in their drier months then.
Selling the green season
The wetter months are not a write-off. Rain often comes in short afternoon bursts, landscapes are at their greenest and hotels are quieter. For groups, a green-season programme works best when:
- the route avoids long boat crossings on exposed seas in the monsoon;
- each day has an indoor alternative, such as a cooking class, museum or spa;
- the destination is matched to the month: Bali in July rather than Bangkok in September, or Koh Samui in August rather than in November.
A destination for every month
Because the region's seasons are staggered, an operator can sell Southeast Asia all year:
- November to April: Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, northern and southern Vietnam.
- May to October: Bali and Java, Koh Samui and the Gulf, Malaysia's east coast, central Vietnam before the autumn rains.
How we use this when we plan
When we build a group series or an Indochina route, we match the order of countries to the season, so the group reaches each place at its best time. Tell us your departure months and we will suggest the route that fits.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best time to visit Southeast Asia with a group?
For mainland Southeast Asia (Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, much of Vietnam), November to April is generally the driest period. For Bali and Java, it is roughly April to October.
What is the green season?
The green season is the wetter part of the year, when landscapes are greenest and visitor numbers are lower. It usually runs from about May or June to October on the mainland.
Can I sell Southeast Asia in July and August?
Yes. Bali, Java, Koh Samui and Malaysia's east coast are generally in their drier months in July and August.
Where can I check the weather before confirming dates?
Use the national meteorological services of each country, such as the Thai Meteorological Department, and discuss the dates with us when you send your brief.
